An 18-wheeler went over an embankment late Monday afternoon on Interstate 40 near Black Mountain, closing all eastbound lanes for a time.

The crash happened about 5 p.m. just before Exit 72.

The driver was freed from the wreckage with only minor injuries, and one lane was reopened. But some eastbound lanes remained closed at 10 p.m., and several drivers said they had been stuck in traffic for hours.

Emergency officials said the remaining lanes could remain closed for some time.
