A growing number of customers fed up with Waste Pro's garbage collection issues in Henderson County are dropping accounts and signing up with competitors.

“We started picking up customers, and we were sort of curious what was going on," said Greg McMinn, who co-owns McMinn Waste Removal with his brother Jeremy.

“Probably, in the last six weeks, we’ve taken on about 25 to 30 customers. My wife said we got another seven today who are former Waste Pro customers.”

Mary Walters is one of the customers who switched to McMinn.

“It’s been wonderful, and I’ve not had a day that it was supposed to be picked up, that it was missed," she said.

“We take a lot of pride in what we do,” said Eddie Gordon, who drives a garbage truck for Maybin's Garbage Service, a third-generation operation serving more than 4,000 residential customers.

The company, which began in 1961, has had some homeowner’s associations switch to the family-run company, Andrea Maybin said.

If Waste Pro doesn’t improve quickly during a 30-day warning period, the company could lose it’s permit to operate. But Henderson County officials said the company would likely sue the county and get an injunction, which would enable Waste Pro to continue to operate, even if the county suspended it’s permit.

Seven additional complaints came in after News 13’s report Tuesday about problems regarding no pick up for weeks for some customers. The county estimates Waste Pro has about 5,000 residential customers in Henderson County after buying Republic’s routes last year.

McMinn said, about seven years ago, Waste Pro reached out to buy his company.

“One of their reps contacted us and asked, 'Would you sell your company?'” he said. “I told them no.”
