UPDATE: Sheriff's office identifies driver in Canton pursuit, crash

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver in a Canton wreck following a multi-county police pursuit as Ruslan Adam Thompson, 26, of 50 Westmore Drive in Asheville.

The Canton car chase Saturday night ended with a crash into a downtown building, and authorities say Thompson, the man behind the wheel, is wanted "nationwide" on armed robbery charges.

Thompson was accused of a January 2016 armed robbery in Canton.

Thompson also has warrants for felony fleeing to elude arrest and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Buncombe County, authorities said.

Police say the chase began after an officer identified Thompson and attempted a traffic stop, and that Thompson led them on a chase starting at Rainbo Lane and Justice Ridge Road just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday night.

The pursuit ended only after Thompson wrecked the SUV he was driving, striking a parked car and a building housing several businesses.

There was a passenger in the car, and police say both Thompson and the passenger were taken to Mission Hospital to be treated for injuries they sustained. There is no word yet as to their condition, and the passenger has not yet been identified.

Businesses spent the Sunday cleaning up and taking a look at the damage. Main Street was closed Sunday morning as investigators collected more evidence.

Business owners say this won't slow them down.

"We'll clean up and we'll board up the windows. And they'll get replaced next week. We'll open for business Tuesday morning," said Wayne Moore, owner of a business affected by the crash.

Deputies say Thompson and a passenger in the SUV were taken to Mission to get treatment for their injuries.

Deputies say there were no other injuries.
