The Waynesville Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved a policy that is tougher on taxi companies that don't follow the rules.

Town leaders voted unanimously to add a $100 penalty for first-time offenders and a fine of up to $500 for repeat offenders.

The issue that prompted tonight's vote was unlicensed taxi drivers.

"Having to have background checks for the drivers, the vehicle certified, they have to carry certain types of insurance. And we have people out here operating without these licenses, without these checks. It's actually putting the public in danger," Waynesville Police Capt. Brian Beck said.

No one took part in the public comment about the policy.
