The snow may have stopped in Western North Carolina, but the bitter cold continues overnight into Thursday, as do gusty winds and wind chills as low as minus 15 degrees, mostly for higher elevations and more northern counties. Wind chills in the mountain valleys are likely to hover between zero and minus 10 degrees through early Thursday morning.

A Wind Chill Warning is in effect for all mountain counties until 7 a.m. Thursday. Frostbite is possible in as little as 30 minutes with wind chills this low.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday across the mountains, foothills and Upstate. Icy roads will be possible where snow hasn't been cleared or has melted during the day.

The snow created dangerous road conditions in Buncombe County on Wednesday morning, contributing to wrecks and leaving drivers stranded.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said major roads were in good shape by afternoon, but secondary roads were the biggest problem heading into Wednesday night.

DOT crews will work overnight, laying a salt and sand mixture. Watch for black ice overnight through midday Thursday.

"Depending on the conditions, the salt/sand mixture does add traction in areas that we have trouble, where its tightened up, and very helpful in areas where there is black ice that could be present," DOT engineer Scott Killough said.

A few additional snow showers or flurries will also be possible overnight around the North Carolina/Tennessee border with little additional accumulation expected.

Lows overnight are expected in the low teens across the mountains, with single digits in some spots. Upstate lows will mostly hover around the mid to upper teens.
