A new welcome plaza at the Western North Carolina Nature Center will cost more than originally thought.

Construction is underway on the $1.1 million project that is designed to have more parking and fewer stairs than the current welcome area.

Asheville City Council will consider Tuesday night adding an additional $60,000 to the project.

Nature Center employees said construction workers ran into some unexpected issues.

"There were some stormwater upgrades that needed to be done, as well as a water supply upgrade that needed to happen in order to get the proper piping in the ground to supply fire hydrants," Jesse Paden, of the Nature Center, said.

The money would come from the Parks and Recreation Department's capital improvement budget.

The new plaza is expected to open sometime in April.
