Wrong way driver leads to double fatality on I-40 in Haywood County
HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) —
The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirms two women from Tennessee died in a head-on collision on Interstate 40 in Haywood County early Tuesday morning.
Troopers said Steven Safreed, of Waynesville, who was driving a Jeep, got on the interstate at Exit 20 in Jonathan Creek and headed east in the westbound lanes shortly after 4:30 a.m.
Authorities said at mile marker 22 he crashed into a Saturn driven by Ronda Hanson, with Joyce Smallen as the passenger.
The Highway Patrol said both women, of Loudon, Tennessee, died at the scene.
Troopers said Safreed suffered serious injuries, including broken bones, and was transported to Mission Hospital.
Any charges are pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
