Asheville Preschool students read with a 4-legged tutor

Not all children love to read, especially out loud. But, if their reading buddy is with them, that's a different story. And if their reading buddy is a Tail Waggin' Tutor, that's even better.

Asheville Preschool recently had a special guest.

For the last five years, J.R. and his dad have been reading with children throughout Buncombe County. J.R. is a therapy dog who listens and provides a relaxed environment for the children.

And, as usual, it worked.

"I don't like to read in front of people, but I like to read in front of dogs. So, that's helping me read in front of everybody," Mason said.

"I never really like to read in front of lots of people, but this makes me feel better when I get to read in front of him," Cora said.

The Jack Russell mix is also quite the entertainer -- and extremely patient with the children. J.R. And his dad also read with children in the Buncombe County libraries.

"It's a win-win-win for everybody -- for the dog, for me. And, you know, to give service this way, it's just very rewarding," Tail Waggin' Tutors' Paul Monitto said.

Tail Waggin' Tutors is affiliated with Therapy Dogs International.
