Students at one Buncombe County School are working in their STEM lab for the first time.

The young scientists at Candler Elementary School worked in teams to build a solar light reducer.

In class, they've learned how pollution in some parts of the country make it difficult to see the stars at night. So, their invention is a way to change that.

In the STEM lab, the students remember four key words for a successful invention -- ask, imagine, plan, create and improve.

"We had a little struggle with the cardboard. It would all fall off and then we had to use tape and it kept falling off. But then it worked," third-grader Guillermo said.

"They have inspired me to start working on being an astrophysicist when I grow up," third-grader Adilynn said.

Once the students' creations are complete, there will be a presentation day, when they will explain their projects and how they work.
