Some Buncombe County students are taking part in the One School, One Book program.

Teachers used a single book to create activities in different subjects for all of the kids to enjoy.

Author Barbara O'Connor visited Leicester Elementary to talk about her book titled "The Adventures of Popeye and Elvis." Second, third and fourth-graders have all read the book, and now they're meeting the woman who wrote it.

She explained how she used personal experiences to describe characters or set the scene.

O'Connor said she wants students to feel confident in their work.

"I like them to think if I can do it, they can do it, and I like to encourage them to use their imagination and don't be afraid to mess up. You can make it better," the author said. "So, I like for them to have that human connection with books like that."

So, far O'Connor has written 18 children's books, and she encouraged students to pick up a pen and write their own stories.
