In honor of National Assistant Principal Week, News 13's Never Stop Learning highlights a special administrator in the mountains.

Terra Thompson is the assistant principal at Avery's Creek Elementary School. She's a 36.5-year education veteran and is no stranger to the classroom.

Thompson says there is no greater joy than working with children and watching them grow into successful students.

"Whatever we expect, that's what we are going to get. So, if we expect a lot from our students, they're going to perform for us," Thompson said. "They're going to rise to the challenge."

Thompson said this school year is bitter sweet for her since she retires in July.

However, she doesn't want to call it retirement, instead calling it "re-wiring."
