October is National Farm to School Month, and mountain schools celebrated by taking part in the "North Carolina Crunch."

At noon on Tuesday, many students here in the mountains crunched into a locally grown apple. At Avery's Creek Elementary, every student took part in the activity.

It's a way to make students aware of the local food and products that are available at farmers markets.

Plus, it's an opportunity to reinforce the importance of a healthy diet.

"It makes you mindful, and it makes you listen better. It makes you really strong," Taylor, a third-grader, said of a healthy diet.

Students also sampled spiced apples and apple sauce.

Miss Apple was there, too, and talked with kids about the importance of farm to school programs.
