At Avery's Creek Elementary, the students got down to business as soon as the bell rang Monday morning.

By 10 a.m., the students were already very involved in their reading and writing lesson.

The classmates in the story were laughing at Chrysanthemum because they believed she had a strange name. They were not being respectful of Chrysanthemum or treating her the way they should.

Ms. Rutherford used the story to help explain the expectations of every student at Avery's Creek. The first-graders said it's a lesson that makes sense.

"She should tell the teacher, and then the teacher should say you must not do that again because that could hurt someone's feelings," Juliela said.

The big first day continued with movement, math, science, social studies and, of course, recess and lunch.
