A number of mountain schools are participating in the Leader in Me program, but one school is taking the program a step further.

The goal of the Leader in Me program is to develop a culture of leadership based on the book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." Avery's Creek teacher Brandy Rutherford is also teaching students the 8th habit.

The 8th habit teaches kids to find what they are good at and then share that talent to inspire others.

The Leader in Me program teaches students skills to be successful, like responsibility, communication and problem-solving.

"Habit one is important because you are in charge of you, and sometimes you have to do stuff on your own instead of people helping you," Khloe, a first-grader, said.

Students learned the new words and movement for the eighth habit and then they sang the song, including the other seven habits.

Avery's Creek Elementary has been a "Leader in Me" school for two years now.
