After 30 years in the classroom, a beloved Buncombe County teacher is getting ready to retire.

Lauren Cowan says she will miss being in the classroom with her students. In a few short days, she will wrap up her teaching career at Avery's Creek Elementary, which she helped open in 1996.

This week, her co-workers celebrated her retirement with cards, pictures, and well-wishes at a luncheon.

"I had both sons, my mom, my dad," Cowan said of the luncheon guests. "It was great. It made me feel special for sure."

"She's one of the nicest teachers I have ever had in my life," fourth-grader Landon said of Cowan. "And she's really nice, and I really appreciate to have her as my teacher."

Students wanted to tell everyone how much they love Mrs. Cowan and that, of course, was followed by lots of hugs.

News 13 wishes her the best and thanks her for 30 years of dedication.
