The Buncombe County Library System has a weekly activity time aimed at working with young children improve their early learning skills.

The Toddler Times program offers interactive story times for children ages 18 months to 3 years. It's for kids and their caregivers in Western North Carolina.

Classes at the South Buncombe branch uses singing, reading and crafting to teach young children important developmental skills. For example, the class uses singing and reading to improve the children's vocabulary. The singing can also teach kids the rhythm of speech.

Craft time is used to help toddlers develop gross motor skills and pre-writing skills.

Tye Anderson, children's specialist at South Buncombe, said the goal is to keep learning fun so the children will want to come back each week.

"The main thing we are looking for is just that they come to the library, they have a good time, they think about reading as a fun activity. And if they come here every week, like some of them do, then it is just part of their life to come to the library," Anderson said.
