Some very small children in Henderson County have reached a very big milestone, and they celebrated their achievements with a pizza party!

Twenty-five pre-schoolers are being recognized for all of their hard work in a reading program. Since January, they have been reading with their families with a goal of reading 1,000 books before kindergarten.

Children and their parents have been filling out reading logs and documenting the books they read together.

The goal of the program is to improve kindergarten readiness in the county.

"Research has shown the best way to get a child to become a reader, is to read to them on a regular basis when they're small like this, in pre-school years," Kathy Kirchoefer, the youth services coordinator, said.

Over 100 kids are registered for the program, which is sponsored by the Henderson County Public Library System.

Co-sponsors include United Way, Smart Start of Henderson County, and the Children and Family Resource Center.
