A grant from a mountain Rotary club is introducing Henderson County students to a new sound in music -- the theremin.

Julie Ledford, a music teacher, used a theremin to show Fletcher Elementary students how they can use their right hand to control the pitch and the left hand to control the volume.

"We got a Rotary grant from the Hendersonville Rotary Club, so we were able to purchase this, and we share it among elementary schools," Ledford explained.

The theremin is an electronic instrument invented in 1919 by a Russian scientist.

Students said that at first they were a little nervous about playing it, but then it got pretty fun.

"Our teacher showed us a video of what to do, and I just thought of something to do in my mind, and I just did it," Derek, a student, said.

Students said the hardest part about playing the theremin is that you don't touch the instrument, which they considered pretty odd.
