Some students in Henderson County are wild about water and already know there are rules that must be followed before you just dive right in.

"If you can not swim, you have to ask permission, and you have to have an adult or a trusted friend to be by the pool to watch over you," second-grader Lio said.

All this week, students from Atkinson Elementary School are taking a water safety class. The aquatics manager at the YMCA went over some very important information that the second-grade students must follow.

Lifeguards said the program targets second-graders because children between the ages of 7 and 9 are at the highest risk of drowning.

The students also learn how to help someone in trouble without endangering themselves.

This is the fifth year for the classes at the Hendersonville YMCA. They will offer another session for school groups in fall 2017.
