Students at Vance Elementary School are celebrating STEAM Week, and that means plenty of activities that involve science, technology, engineering, art and math.

"And that's what happens when you put metal in liquid nitrogen ... it bends," Mandi williams, of KidSenses in Rutherfordton, said, holding up the piece of metal.

Williams was showing students the subzero effect. She' conducted simple science experiments and explained to students why the reactions occurred.

Activities were underway in every classroom, as well. Students say hands on learning makes it fun.

"I love how we always get to do fun experiments and make things, and I like how it's not just someone teaching us. We get to do it," Olivia, a fifth-grader said.

Jackson, another fifth-grader, agreed.

"Yeah, I think hands on learning is a lot more. It reminds you, cause when you're reading out of a book, there are so many other books you can read, and it's not very helpful, but when it's hands on you can remember that experience."

Students studied global issues like trash in the ocean or other types of pollution. They then designed and built a replica of an existing invention or created their own.
