Students at Jones Elementary School are discovering their community and the important role firefighters have in keeping us safe.

Firefighter Kyle led 74 first-graders on a tour of the downtown Asheville fire station.

They got to see how the trucks operate, where the firefighters eat and sleep, and even how they can slide down the pole on special occasions.

As part of the community, the kids are learning the difference between urban and rural areas.

"Some communities have buildings that are very close together and some have really, really far apart ones," student Emmett explained.

During an interview with one student, the alarm went off at the fire station. Thankfully, the call turned out to be a false alarm.
