During the month of October, pumpkins and spiders are popular items for Halloween and fall decoration. But one Candler class room is using them as a teaching tool for kindergarten math.

Students in Mrs. Wendy Davis's class at Candler Elementary School used their 100's chart and pumpkin seeds to do math activities. At other centers in the room, students used spiders and a spider web to help with this assignment.

Teachers said the visual activity makes math easier to understand for some students.

"How can you ask for help other than asking the teacher? What tools will help you in the room? So, it's really building that community and those routines that allow them to work in independent groups," Davis said.

Students also used visual tools to recognize different patterns that represent the same number.
