Some local artists are sparking kids' imaginations with their works of art.

Karen Hawkins, with the art group GoFigure, showed Oakley Elementary students some of her clay creations that were inspired by the book "The Napping House"

Every year, members of the group selects a children's book and create characters from that story. It's a unique way for the artists to encourage kids to read and use their imaginations.

"Well, he has a tail on the end, four arms and two heads," Oakley Elementary student Owen said, describing the character he named Slithery.

This year, GoFigure is introducing 13 new characters to kids in Buncombe County.

The "Storybook Characters on Parade" exhibit will be on display April 3-26 at Pack Memorial Library.
