A Hendersonville Elementary School teacher was recognized for her excellence in the classroom.

Sherry Coren recently received the 2017 Outstanding Educator Award from the North Carolina Science, Mathematics and Technology Education Center.

The 14-year classroom veteran said she learned a long time ago that most students respond better to "hands-on learning."

"They'll remember the things that they do. They won't remember sitting and taking notes," she said. "I mean, they're going to remember the songs. They're going to remember the activities that we do."

Coren's students told News 13 they always look forward to her class.

"She makes science really fun," Miranda, a student, said. "I think she's my favorite teacher out of the entire school."
