Students from Mills River Elementary School went to the farm to find out where their food comes from.

The kindergartners watched as the jersey cows at Mills River Creamery got their first of two milkings of the day.

One of the goals is to teach children that mom and dad buy food at the grocery store, but it is planted or raised on farms and dairies.

"I think it's important that we have cows so we can get the milk from them and make a lot of food, probably," kindergartner Eli said.

The kids also learned they have cows to thank for the ice cream they enjoyed while visiting the farm.

The Johnston family is a third generation dairy family. Their grandfather started selling fresh milk to the public in 1917.
