At the beginning of the year, Alicia LaDow set a goal for herself: to make learning more meaningful for her students at Pisgah Forest Elementary.

Her fourth-graders have been putting together a monthly TV news report about positive stories across the United States and around the world.

Their reports have included a wide range of topics, including reversing extinction, space travel, and curing diseases.

"They know they have to write notes on what they're reading and then come up with a script and going over it so many times they really remember what they're reading, and I see them reading for information," LaDow said.

The assignments have helped grow a love a reading in her students.

"We learn more about what's going on around the world, and we want to read more because it's just more exciting," student Loris said.

"I use to not like reading in the third grade last year, but now I do because I'm reading about interesting stuff that I didn't know before," student Jake explained.

Students said the TV broadcast is their favorite part of the classroom activity.

If you'd like to watch any of their newscasts, you can find their reports on YouTube.
