Students at Pleasant Gardens Elementary School have very big hearts, and they're using their love and kindness to give back to the community.

Students in Mrs. Queens' K-2 class are packing "Blessing Bags" for the homeless in McDowell County. Inside, they've placed things like tissues, tioletries, snacks, socks, and inspirational messages.

The bags will be given to local law enforcement officers so they can give them to folks on the streets who may need them.

"They don't have anything, so we need to give them some stuff, like water so they don't dehydrate," Maddox, a second-grader, said. "And we're giving them glow sticks so they can see in the dark, because they don't have light."

As part of the Kindness Begins with Me Project, the class also collected new and gently used coats and blankets, which will be given to the women's shelter and an animal rescue called Rusty's Legacy.

Mrs. Queen and Ms. Cindi say they hope the service project will help students better understand the importance of being kind.
