Hard work in the classroom paid off for some local fourth-graders.

Last month, they were asked to participate in an essay contest about women in sports. The two winning essays came from Oakley Elementary and Avery's Creek.

As a reward for their hard work, about 140 students from Avery's Creek took part in the Fed Cup Carnival on Wednesday.

Different activities were set up around the room so the kids could work on their tennis skills.

"So, like I was excited because, like, when I first heard it, I thought there was some mistake because I've never written an essay that won a contest before," essay winner Kristina said.

And to make sure the memory lasts a life time, they all had their picture taken.

Students said they had a blast and might even think about taking up tennis as their next sport.
