A summer reading program is in full swing for students in the Asheville City School system.

During the three-week camp at Isaac Dickson Elementary School, kids participate in group reading, reading to themselves, reading to someone and writing.

Teachers say the more they read, the better writers and spellers they'll become.

"They're able to get a jumpstart on the material, but also not having the summer slide of losing the information because we are out for so long," teacher Blake Dimeglio said.

Dimeglio is the director of the program. He says half way through the program, the kids are doing awesome, and he's proud of all of them.
