Students at Jones Elementary School are learning about animal habitats, and their first step in this lesson was to take a walk on the wild side.

Armed with their science journals and binoculars, students hit the trail at Beaver Lake in north Asheville.

They walked through the bird sanctuary, looking for different types of plants and wildlife. In their journals, they write down what they see.

"It's like a treasure hunt and we found turtles, birdhouses and lilypads," student Liam said.

Once the students returned to the classroom, they wrote about their observations at the lake and study the different habitats found in Western North Carolina.
