Volunteers needed to help Eliada expand its services

A local child care center hopes to expand it's services, but it needs help to make the growth a reality.

Volunteers can give time or money or both -- just a little bit can make a big difference.

Eliada Home wants to help ease the child care shortage in Buncombe County. The goal is to remodel a building Buncombe County commissioners leased to Eliada Home in April, creating seven additional classrooms that will allow the organization to offer services to 68 more children this fall.

The colorful and well-furnished building next to Eliada was a daycare center for 20 years but has been vacant for a year.

Erica, who said she was excited about the new classrooms, is one of the many success stories at Eliada Home. She and her classmates are learning about composting and how earthworms do a lot of the work in the garden.

"The community should be inspired to know that these children are going to have a great start to kindergarten. Studies show that one year of pre-kindergarten sets the children up for success all the way up through college and their career," lead teacher Natalie Cowal said.
