Later this month, folks in one Buncombe County community will be running for a reason.

Woodfin Elementary has a new STEM lab, and money raised during it's fourth annual Read, Write, and Run 5K will help cover the cost of lab supplies, as well as provide transportation for a summer reading program.

"We want to immerse these students in this process, so they are creating and designing their own ideas and then collaborating with a team to make sure that they succeed," STEM lab manager Emily McKinney said as students worked to create an alien animal.

Armed with toothpicks, Q-tips, Play-Doh play and a wiggly eye, the kindergartners got to work.

As a team, the students came up with a plan.

The activity is a great way for students to understand the importance of good problem-solving skills.

"We wanted it to look just like a butterfly alien, I think, and it did turn out like one," student Jada said.

Students learn to make changes along the way to ensure they followed their plan.

The 5K fundraiser is set for 9 a.m.April 29. Click here to learn more.
