Hendersonville Irish pub stocks up for St. Patrick's Day

Matt Johnes wasn't looking to buy his own pub when the opportunity came up a few years ago.

Now, he's the 3rd owner of the sprawling Hannah Flanagan's Irish Pub in historic downtown Hendersonville.

His pub will be packed with revelers Friday as St. Patrick's Day falls on a weekend night for the first time since 2012.

In preparation for the event, Johnes's kitchen staff is making 1,400 pounds of corned beef and 600 pounds of potatoes. He's ordered twice the amount of Guinness than normal this week.

Mark Lowe and another bagpiper will be at the pub all afternoon playing traditional Irish songs.

Helping bring Irish cheer wherever they go, the Drake School of Irish Dance in Asheville is performing over the St. Patrick's Day weekend at Highland Brewery.

Director Heather Gallagher teaches young women learn traditional Irish reels at Drake, including "treble reels" with hard-bottomed shoes.
