Haywood County, NC -- More than 500 local families will now have a Christmas meal, thanks to an annual program in Haywood County. It's called the "Christmas Food Basket program."

Items like canned ham, rolls, yams and pie make up the meal boxes being distributed on Thursday.

Ingles and 3 Haywood County Rotary clubs team-up to provide the items and pack the boxes.

Members and volunteers with Rotary are delivering them to 530 Haywood County families.

This is the 21st year for the effort and organizer Tom Knapko says each year the need grows.

"We always are looking for this miracle to come true where we have to balance the amount of money that we collect and the number of boxes, and we've never been short," says Knapko. "Everyone has been fed over these years. It's been tremendous," he adds.

Knapko says since the program began, the 3 Rotary Clubs and their families have donated more than $167,500 and more than 7,500 meals.
