You might know someone who's glad to pick up the restaurant tab for a veteran. News 13's Persons of the Week take that concept to another level.

Jim Miller along with Vickie Olek provide a breakfast buffet to service men and women on the third Thursday of the month.

Donations drive the effort under the umbrella of Blue Ridge Honor Flight. You can designate "veterans breakfast" with your donation. Miller also hosts veterans on the last Wednesday of the month at South Rock Grill in Hendersonville for free chicken wings.

Dixie Diner owner Vickie Olek puts together the spread at a 30 percent discount for the nonprofit, so they get more bang for their buck.

"It's a really good feeling," she said. "These guys deserve this. This might be the only time they get to talk to someone else you know."

Every four weeks at Dixie Diner, Miller's a guest host for the most important meal of the day.

"Jump in there!" Miller said recently to a room of dozens of hungry vets. "Yeah, breakfast is served."

"If you leave here hungry it's your own fault," one veteran said.

A couple of years ago, Jim started the breakfast idea, which draws about 80 people. Their hats mark the sacrifice of so many generations when duty called.

"Veterans never do get enough spotlight in my opinion," Miller said. "So, anytime you can, put a smile on a veteran or welcome him home or thank him."

"And, if you can, encourage the next generation to ask questions like 'Who are those guys?'" Miller added.

It's a conversation that sometimes begins with something as simple as breakfast.
