Casting For Recovery

Updated: Friday, December 6 2013, 11:18 AM EST

It's a way to heal from cancer that a group of women never dreamed possible, and now they're hooked.  Casting for Recovery is a weekend retreat for women recovering from breast cancer.  More than a dozen women attended this year's fall retreat at the Lake Logan Episcopal Center in Haywood County. The women learn how to fly fish in the West fork of the Pigeon River.  Many of the women have never fished before the retreat, but many say the experience is therapeutic.

"I'll take this weekend with me," says participant Kathy Ackerman.  "I've learned so much about how to go on with the rest of my life as a breast cancer survivor ."

Casting for Recovery Carolinas hosts two retreats annually at the center in Haywood County.  Organizers say participants don't have to enjoy fishing to attend the retreat.  They add that a lot of important things happen off the water.  If you or someone you know is interested the program, click here for more information.
