Swing Bed at MedWest

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:18 PM EDT
It's one of the smallest hospitals of its kind providing transitional care.

At MedWest Swain in Bryson City, they're now using something called "swing bed."

Anne Reinert, program coordinator, "an example of a swing-bed patient could be someone that had knee or hip replacement, and they are not quite ready to go home yet."

That patient would spend several days in a room like this getting stronger.

A swing-bed patient often receives antibiotics and therapy aimed at independent living.

Tim Robinson, physical therapy asst., "we do physical therapy and occupational therapy one to two times a day depending on the order from the PT."

Nurses say that MedWest Swain has beds for up to 25 swing-bed patients.Swing Bed at MedWest
