It's been a tradition at one mountain elementary school for years and it's still going strong.
Students at McDowell County are celebrating "Mother Earth"!
Naturalist Marci Spencer is helping these junior scientists examine homing pigeons.
She's here to teach them about these wonderful birds and introduce them to a career path they could follow if they wanted to work with animals.
There's also a bee keeper, a game warden and several horse men.
Students say all of the activities make it a great and interesting day.
Students from West McDowell Junior High, early college and the high school, are here teaching the younger kids about water quality.
They're searching through the muck trying to find certain types of microinvertebrate.
This is the 5th year for the program.
