Since 1965, Head start has served more than 30 million children, including preschoolers and their families. In this Never Stop Learning report, we see how the program helps little children transition to the classroom.
There's a flurry of activity in the classroom. This is the first year Head Start has been offered at Johnston Elementary in a number of years. The children learn through play. Activities are designed to teach them help them with their colors and shapes, as well as their numbers and letters.
One of the goals of the program is to make sure children from low income families are prepared for kindergarten.
The Head Start Program is funded through federal, state and local money.
