At a time in education when the arts are more likely to end up on the chopping block, Asheville Middle School administrators realize the importance of allowing kids to create, and students say it's awesome!
The 6th grade strings students are practicing for their upcoming concert.
Their instructor, Ruben Orengo is of course concerned about how they sound, but he also stresses the importance of posture, poise and presentation.
At Asheville Middle the students have the opportunity to participate in a 45 minute music class, 5 days a week.
They say music class is important, and for some students, this is the only place where they can experience the arts
The spring concert featuring the 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be Thursday night, May 23rd at Asheville Middle School starting at 7pm.
And congratulations to the strings teacher, Mr. Orengo was one of 50 teachers in the nation to receive the Yale Distinguished Music Educator award.
He has taught music education in Asheville for the past 27 years! Bravo!
