The Civil War

Updated: Wednesday, November 20 2013, 11:09 AM EST
Mountain students are learning about their history and heritage.

Some volunteers visited Mars Hill Elementary School to teach 5th graders about the bloodiest conflict in American history.

Harold Cole took time to tell the students about his families link to the Civil War.  He along with Tom and Ted are reenactors.

They explain Madison Countys history tied to the execution of 13 men and boys in the Shelton Laurel Community in 1863.

Todays assignment is for the students to compare and contrast their current lives to what it was like to live long ago.

Students say they appreciate the "show and tell" approach to learning.

Now, they're next assignment is to write a report on what they learned. The Civil War
