Vet Card Campaign

Updated: Tuesday, December 24 2013, 05:57 PM EST
Mountain students were asked to take part in a service learning project and one Buncombe County school jumped at the chance to help.

More than 300 students at Leicester Elementary School participated in the Vet Card Campaign.

The goal is to put cards of appreciation into the hands of older veterans.

Teachers say they're proud of their students for taking the project seriously and even a little surprised at the heart felt pride and emotion in each one.

Joe Elliott, who's father was a World War II veterans started the Vet Card Campaign back in November.

He'll now take these cards and crafts to older veterans living in western North Carolina.

A number of other schools and organizations are taking part in the program, but Joe says more help is needed.
