Amazing stories of courage and loss are in the spotlight at Carolina Village retirement home in Hendersonville.400 residents were asked to display pictures, medals, and other mementos as a way to spotlight the greatest generation."A couple of months ago I was reading the social histories about the residents here," says Phyliss Smith. "And I started just to see amazing stories."Ann and Miles Hudson have a wedding picture on exhibit from 69 years ago. "We now have a metal suitcase that is full of letters because we wrote each other every day," Mr. Hudson says. There are also pictures of lost love. Resident Odean Fondren was married when her husband was killed in combat. She was pregnant with their second daughter at the time."I think about it all the time," says Fondren. "It was kind of bad because we were childhood sweethearts. We grew up together on the farm."Joe Piland's older brother was killed in the Phillipines, showing us a photo copy of the dog tag found washed up on the beach. "In fact that's one of my personal problems I can't shake that off. He was a very close brother."The exhibit has grown dramatically as more and more residents contribute. Taking pride in what's become an instant conversation starter and a connection to their past.
