Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:15 PM EDTMolly McCurdy of Waynesville first fell in love with the dulcimer about 35 years ago. As it turns out, not too long before Cyndi Lauper became an 80's pop icon with her debut album "She's So Unusual."Who would have thought that in 2013, their worlds would collide.Molly's putting the finishing touches on a dulcimer destined for the spotlight."Her favorite flower is an orchid, so I put the orchids on it," she says about the instrument made just for Lauper. "I met her when she was doing a concert in Asheville," McCurdy says. "And was able to hand her a business card.""Two years later I heard from her manager who said she'd like to have one."Lauper has long looked to the dulcimer for a unique part of her musical repertoire. "I'm hoping Cyndi will show it to other celebrities and musicians," McCurdy says. "And that maybe I can get some dulcimers for some other celebrities, and it'll give me exposure." Potentially opening up a whole new market for an instrument passed down in the mountains for generations.Local Woman Makes Instrument For 80's Star
