Choking Game Death Hits Home To One Family

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:21 PM EDT

The death of a Swain County teen is hitting one local family hard. The sheriff's office says 16-year-old Nathan Southards died three weeks ago from the choking game.

News of Southards' death is especially difficult for Dale and Michele Galloway. In 2007, their son Connor passed away from the choking game. They found the 12-year-old hanging in his room. Since his death, they have been trying to raise awareness about various high risk behaviors including the choking game. The Galloways have started a website, called Connor's Heart. Their goal is to improve school based education programs, change policy at the local state and federal level and educate parents on behaviors.

The Swain County Sheriff's Office is also taking steps to prevent other tragedies. They will be holding a public forum later this month called Risky Teen Behaviors. It will be held in the Fine Arts Center at the high school on April 16th.
