Solar Flare Concerns

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:21 PM EDT

If there are breaks in the clouds this weekend, mountain residents could be in for a treat in the night sky. A huge solar flare is headed towards Earth. Scientists from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute say it will reach our atmosphere around 9 a.m. Saturday. The material could cause some brief, minor interruptions in high frequency radio, and power grids. It will also cause auroras, also known as northern lights, as far south as the mountains. This is the unedited interview with P.A.R.I. Science Director Mike Castelaz.
