Swannanoa Crime Concerns

Updated: Friday, July 26 2013, 10:36 PM EDT

An uptick in crime in Swannanoa has the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office stepping up their game. Sheriff Van Duncan is putting a special team in the community to help combat these problems. The unit will specifically be identifying key issues, speaking with community members and leaders and creating a plan of action.

The sheriff held a special meeting Wednesday for Swannanoa residents to meet the Community Oriented Problem Solving team. They were able to talk with the sheriff about the problems they're seeing. The sheriff also gave them a list of crimes that have been reported in the area.

Over the past three months, there have been more than 1,500 calls made to the sheriff's office. Of those calls, there were two armed robberies, 36 breaking and entering, and 12 larcenies from vehicles reported.

This is the second time COPS have been in the Swannanoa community. Sheriff Duncan says the first go around was successful, but obviously there is more work to be done.

At the end of the 30 days, the sheriff's office will meet with community members again and present their findings. Deputies also hope the community will form a watch group, so they can be the eyes and ears for the sheriff's office.
