Teachers Voice Concerns To State Rep

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:22 PM EDT

Teachers in McDowell County are rallying to save their assistants. Governor McCrory's proposed budget includes a 4% reduction in funding to teacher's aides. On Friday,  teachers held a town hall meeting with State Rep Josh Dobson of the 85th District to voice their concerns.

Governor McCrory's budget allocates money for hiring 1,800 more teachers over the next two years but the budget slashes 3,000 teacher's assistant positions.  Teachers in McDowell County say having help, especially in kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms is invaluable. They say without teacher's assistants the quality of education will suffer.

The McDowell County School Board says they plan to discuss the proposed budget cuts during their meeting on Monday.

The house and senate will conference about the budget next week.
