Contractor Scam

Updated: Tuesday, November 19 2013, 05:57 PM EST
More victims of a man claiming to be a home improvement contractor continue to come forward. They're speaking out after seeing News 13 reports about an ex-convict who's bilked people out of thousands of dollars.

Barbara Baker signed a contract with Danny Smith from All About Home Improvement last May for a metal roof on her Montford home. After weeks of excuses, she wanted her money back.

"He left us a number maybe two weeks ago saying I'm going to pay you on the 7th, and we called the number last night and his wife acted like it was the wrong number," said Baker.

Baker hired someone else to replace the roof and is now out $500.

It's the same thing that happened to an Arden woman who lost $180 a few months ago when Smith was supposed to paint her deck.

The same thing for a Candler woman who lost $8,000 when she signed a deal with Danny Smith last year to enclose her patio.

Baker can't believe Smith's been running from customers for years. She's even more surprised to learn he served 10 years in prison for cheating people out of their money.

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office says this is civil matter and their hands are tied.
