Remodeling Disaster

Updated: Monday, October 21 2013, 08:47 PM EDT
An elderly Candler woman says she's out 8-thousand dollars after a man she hired to enclose her patio walked off with her money without ever really starting the project.   Bessie Inman says Daniel Smith the 3rd convinced her to pay the total bill up front before the project was ever started.

She made her last payment in January of 2013 and hasn't seen much of him since.  She's tried repeatedly to get him back to work on her home with no success.  She says Smith has even threatened to come back and commit suicide in front of her if she complains to anyone.  She's worried what else he might do if he comes back and says she wants others to know he can't be trusted.

We've learned smith was released from prison in 2009 after serving ten years for crimes including larceny, obtaining signatures by false pretense, defrauding an inkeeper and writing worthless checks.  Sheriff's deputies say Inman will have to take her case to the magistrate to file civil charges since it involves a contract.
